Major(s)/Minor(s): Communication major and Global Business Leadership minor
Title/place of internship/fellowship, etc.: Assistant/Program coordinator at Holy Cross Anglican Church
How did you find out about your internship/fellowship/etc.? The process of finding this internship was unique given the circumstances this year. Due to COVID-19, there was a significant change of plans with my already secured internship. As a result of the remote internship requirement, I opted to work within my own community at Holy Cross Anglican Church. The opportunity was presented by a family friend and it worked out perfectly. I was able to enact change within my community, aid the church in broadening their platform, meet new people, establish connections, help countless families all while during a global pandemic.
What were your responsibilities at your internship/fellowship/etc.? Regular tasks included the digitization of the church, social media management, conducting wellness calls to church members, virtual management of food drives (compiling grocery list, contacting volunteers, tracing of persons that were fed weekly etc.), assistance weekly with virtual Sunday School, creating digital sign up forms for church services, flyer/poster design, advertisements and startup of various new initiatives.
What was the most beneficial aspect of your experience? The most beneficial aspect of my experience was my role within the food assistance program. The process of executing this event, watching it grow develop, and seeing how many lives were impacted created a feeling that’s hard to put into words. I deem it beneficial because I was able to help others through hard work, creativity, and a selfless attitude.
What was the most surprising thing you experienced or learned during your internship/fellowship/etc.? The most surprising thing I learned during my internship was that there is no limit to my creativity. I was able to translate my artistic skills from a paintbrush and canvas to my laptop. My internship site truly gave me free rein as it relates to marketing, designs, and much more. I was able to tap into a newfound skill of editing videos, freelance art, and audio tech. Furthermore, I was also surprised at how much work can be accomplished from home once you create a space that works for you.
How can you apply what you experienced at your internship/fellowship/etc. in the future? I can apply my experience from my internship in the future through building on the skills that I’ve developed. My problem solving, communication, technological, time management, work ethic, and teamwork skills were all put to the test and strengthened. These are all areas that can help flourish in any environment. Added to this, I plan to develop my new technical skills and seek out more information in terms of a career or side hustle in that field.
What advice would you offer to future students interested in this experience? My advice to future students interested in this program would be to take full advantage of it. This program provides a unique opportunity to either work locally or abroad while being civically active.
