Intern name: Flannery White
Major(s)/Minor(s): Political Science major and Music minor
Title/place of internship/fellowship, etc.: Impact Team Intern at Hot Bread Kitchen/Brandl Scholar
How did you find out about your internship/fellowship/etc.? I learned about it through the Bennie/Johnnie network -- my site supervisor is a Bennie! I was also previously interested in the food industry.
What were your responsibilities at your internship/fellowship/etc.? I helped with the creation of a "Resource Library", which contained research about the food industry and a variety of topics that are important to Hot Bread Kitchen! I worked on a report that compared Hot Bread Kitchen's workforce training program to other similar programs nationwide! I also attended meetings, webinars, and other events that related to the food industry.
What was the most beneficial aspect of your experience? Gaining hands-on research skills and applying those to my projects as an intern!
What was the most surprising thing you experienced or learned during your internship/fellowship/etc.? I wasn't surprised by this, but I am continuously amazed by the creativity and the passion of the women in the food industry. I loved learning about new foods and products that were being developed in the Hot Bread Kitchen incubator!
How can you apply what you experienced at your internship/fellowship/etc. in the future? My internship experience reinforced for me the need for economic justice and reform of our economic system, especially during a global pandemic! Economic justice is something I plan to work for as a future attorney.
What advice would you offer to future students interested in this experience? Take all the opportunities for undergrad research that you can! If you're a POLS major, 222 is challenging but worth it -- learning Excel, SPSS, or something similar gives you a competitive edge. Lastly, don't discount other work experience that you might have. Working at a farm to table restaurant for three summers as well as working at our very own Gorecki gave me real-life experience in the food industry and a strong work ethic!
