Pre-athletic Training

CSB/SJU offers a pre-professional program in athletic training. In order to attain BOC certification as an athletic trainer, an individual must complete an entry-level athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and pass the BOC certification exam. The pre-professional program in athletic training at CSB/SJU is not a CAATE accredited program. Rather, the pre-athletic training program is a curriculum specifically created by you and your advisor to help you gain acceptance into a CAATE accredited graduate program in athletic training of your choice. A list of accredited programs can be found on the CAATE website.

During your four years at CSB/SJU, you will work closely with the pre-athletic training advisor to create an individualized academic plan. This plan will include prerequisite coursework, as identified by the various accredited graduate programs in athletic training, and volunteer experiences that will help to make you an attractive candidate for admission into the graduate programs.

Students may select any major; graduate programs in athletic training do not prefer one major to another. Most CSB/SJU pre-athletic training students major in biology, integrative science, psychology, or nutrition.

Specific information regarding prerequisite and recommended courses, minimum GPA and prerequisite GPA, Graduate Record Exam (GRE), and athletic training observation and experience requirements can be found on the individual graduate program websites. Also, if you completed advanced placement (AP) courses while in high school, make sure to read the graduate program's policy regarding advanced placement (AP) courses.
