CSB/SJU Libraries Update

College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University Libraries are prepared to support teaching, learning and research for students and faculty through multiple means of access. We have been working to ensure that as many resources and services as possible are available online. Access to the Library facilities will be adjusted as needed in compliance with campus guidelines. Visit this page often to check on changes to services, hours and access.

Clemens Library and Alcuin Library

Clemens Library (CSB) and Alcuin Library & Dietrich Reinhart Learning Commons (SJU) are closed to patrons. The front lobbies of each building remain open for pick up or return of library materials between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, through Friday March 27. Thereafter, the Libraries are completely closed in compliance with Minnesota’s Stay At Home Executive Order.

Finding Resources

Searching the Library through our catalog or from a specific database still remains the initial task for finding information. Our Research Guides can direct you to the best resources for starting a search. Need more assistance? A librarian can respond to your questions through email, phone, or video conference.

Accessing Resources

Off-campus access to the Library’s digital collection is available to all current CSB/SJU faculty, staff, and students. Faculty creating assignments for students should use this prefix before the web address of a library-licensed online resource. The ezproxy service authenticates users as associated with our institutions. See this page for more information, or contact us for assistance.

Some vendors have extended online options of licensed digital materials. See our list of Library and Course Material Expansions for more information. Please contact a librarian if you need assistance identifying online alternatives to our print collections.

Access to physical collections is not available until further notice. Please contact a librarian if you need assistance identifying online alternatives to our print collections.

Archives Research

The Archives are closed to visitors, but digital resources are available to anyone via the websites for the CSB Archives and the SJU Archives. Questions about Archives can be emailed to archivist Peggy Roske.

Interlibrary Loan

If you are able, please return physical interlibrary loan materials before leaving campus. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to process loan requests for physical items, but we can process copy requests for articles and for chapters or sections of books. Please see video demonstrating how to request a book chapter. The ILL Office can provide advice on the availability of specific resources.

New Materials

Faculty may continue to make recommendations for new materials. If you have an urgent request for an ebook or other digital resource to support transition to teaching online, contact Collection Development Librarian David Wuolu directly.

Returning Materials

Patrons may return books and DVDs any time through our external book return boxes. We will extend loan periods for anyone with CSB/SJU Library resources as College and University closures require.

Requesting Instruction

If library instruction sessions were previously scheduled, your librarian will contact faculty to determine next steps. Zoom conferencing will be an option for both class instruction and one-on-one research meetings with students. Asynchronous support is also available; we suggest assigning your liaison librarian a role on your Canvas page so that we can field questions or make recommendations to students there. We have online tutorials, research guides, and lots of handouts and activities to help your students.

While faculty can be confident that linking to library resources is a safe way to observe copyright and licensing commitments, many items may be shared with students under Fair Use provisions of the copyright law. The University of Minnesota Libraries has a useful guide to copyright compliance when rapidly shifting a class online.

Here is a summary of copyright guidance from copyright librarians at many institutions.
