Dan Whalen '70 is an active community volunteer and private investor. He is currently chair and owner of Great Places to Work Institute, an enterprise that certifies and transforms organizations as great places to work; a partner in HTEC Group, a hardware and software development company; and president of the Whalen Family Foundation. His volunteer activities include service to organizations in Minnesota, Northern California, and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Dan focuses his volunteer efforts on youth development and education, and serves on the Boards of a number of non-profit organizations.
Whalen has served Saint John’s as a member of the Board of Regents/Trustees from 1997-2007 and 2008-2017 (including a term as chair from 2004-07), and was chair for the capital campaign One Generation to the Next, and co-chair for the most recent campaign, Forward Ever Forward. In 2005, Saint John’s presented to Whalen the Fr. Walter Reger Distinguished Alumni Award. Dan served as Interim President of SJU from October 2008 until June 30, 2009. In recognition of his service and leadership, Whalen was presented an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Saint John’s in October 2009.
Dan received a BS in Government from Saint John's University, an MBA from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, and an AM from Stanford University's Food Research Institute. Dan lives in Oakland, California with his wife, Katharine, and has three children, Matthew, Anna, and Michael.
