What Mass Means: How Sacrifice and Real Presence Are Life-Changing

This presentation will discuss how we tend to think of “sacrifice” and “real presence” as doctrines to believe in – perhaps with some vague awareness of complicated medieval terms such as “transubstantiation.” But the logic of the liturgies of the various Christian traditions, and the whole point of the Vatican II renewal, is that our liturgical sharing in Christ’s dying and rising is meant to transform us individually and communally. The implications are huge!
Fr. Anthony Ruff OSB is a monk of St. John’s Abbey and associate professor of liturgy and liturgical music at CSB/SJU and the School of Theology and Seminary. He has masters degrees from St. John’s and Yale, and his doctorate is from the University of Graz, Austria. He has served on the national boards of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians and the Hymn Society, was an advisor to the U.S. bishops’ conference in drafting their document Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, and chaired the international committee that composed the ministerial chants for the 2011 Roman Missal. He is founding director of the National Catholic Youth Choir and editor of the popular liturgy blog Pray Tell. He is abbey music director and organist and directs Gregorian chant.
