Coaching Education

An athletic coach is a professional who works with all age groups and all levels of athletic competition, teaching proper sport technique, strategies, character, and good sportsmanship. Using their knowledge of sport nutrition, injury prevention and management, sport psychology, and strength training and conditioning, the coach structures and conducts safe, effective, and fun practices and competitions.

Youth organizations, schools and community programs are in dire need of qualified, energetic, and enthusiastic coaches who are committed to the development of their athletes, including the development of self-esteem and leadership qualities.

To be a head varsity coach in the State of Minnesota, we recommend you complete:
  • EXHS 203 Coaching Methods (2 credits)
  • EXHS 230 Sport Injury Management I (2 credits)
  • EXHS 231 Sport Injury Management II (2 credits)
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (available through CSB Campus Recreation)
We encourage you to complete additional coaching courses to further enhance your preparation for coaching:
  • EXHS 202 Sport Psychology (2 credits) OR EXHS 324 Sport and Exercise Psychology (4 credits)
  • EXHS 204 Sport Nutrition (2 credits)
  • EXHS 310 Principles of Strength Training and Conditioning (4 credits)
  • EXHS 323 Sport in a Diverse Society (4 credits)
  • EXHS 390 Sport Ethics (4 credits)
  • EXHS 397 Coaching Internship (1-4 credits)
